futures work

Below are the highlights of my team projects from my Master of Design Strategic Foresight & Innovation
program at OCAD University. The first entry is my Major Research Project, which is essentially a thesis that
is the final requirement of the program. The project took about 3 months and was co-authored with
Shannah Segal. We created an experiential show that ran for 2 weeks in the OCAD graduate gallery,
a written report, and a video of expert interviews that is on Youtube. Immerse yourself in the future,

MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECT (MRP)

Project: The Next Familiar

Using a speculative design foresight approach, this study explores the rapidly developing area
of wearable, implantable and ingestible technologies, and how they might influence us over the
next several decades to the 2040s. The authors have combined traditional research methods
such as literature review and expert interviews; foresight methods, such as environmental
scanning, trends analysis and scenario creation; and narrative, imagery and conjecture to
produce an evocative account of future possibilities in the realm of the tools we keep and
use close to and inside our bodies.

FORESIGHT STUDIO

Project : The Future of Canadian Public Broadcasting

Every moment in time is the start of a possible future. Individuals and institutions, at some point
will wonder what the future holds. What can we look forward to? What should we try to avoid?
While it will never really be possible to “future-proof” our decisions or actions, the practice of
foresight can help us understand the possible shape of our world to come. In our dossier you
will experience our signal and trend scanning, possible future scenarios and implications to
those scenarios about Canadian public broadcasting in 2031.

SPECIAL TOPICS IN STRATEGIC FORESIGHT & INNOVATION

Project : WANNAMAKACLANET

What will earth potentially be like in 2150? In our summer futures course we explored the future of
humans and robots, terraforming, and planetary scale habitation. **Warning: you may experience
lost languages and meat-like products.

UNDERSTANDING SYSTEMS AND SYSTEMATIC DESIGN

Project : The System of Childbirth

A group of 3 women, 2 are mothers with children and 1 pregnant and about to become a mother form
a team to think systemically about child-birthing. This project uncovers many systems on the choices we
Canadians have and can make on child-birthing and compiles them into a very nice and easy to consume
presentation of system maps.

EDUCATION IN ONTARIO

Project : ik-12DisRuptU  Technology & Innovation in Education

Education in Ontario has not changed for many many years. There are disruptions occurring in the
world that are creating tension in this landscape. This tension has needed to happen and because
of the stagnation we are on the verge of an education reform. My team and I wrestled with the question
“Given the TDSBs mandate of achieving equity, innovation, accountability and accessibility, to what
extent might information and communications technology support new models of learning?”

RESEARCH

Project : In the moment research – Mobile Diary

A mobile diary is a way of gathering specific user/participant information. It is typically used with a group
of identified individuals, capturing their reflections of their daily routines from their perspective in situ’.
Researchers would not be able to access this type of personal and private data through interviews
or observations. Our exploration attempted to document the habits of the “working/schooling mom”
over a period of time, to collect insights and patterns to create an app for time management.
